World Tourism Day

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) declared in 1979 the 27th of September to become a World Tourism Day. The first such day was celebrated in 1980. This year, you can enjoy this event in Slovakia at the end of September and beginning of october. The last weekend of September, you can participate in guided tours for free in many towns in Slovakia.

Between September 27th and 30th, Nitra, Banská Bystrica, Košice, Bratislava and Trnava as well as museums in Žilina, Rimavská Sobota or Spišská Nová Ves will participate consecutively to celebrate the World Tourist Guides Day with various events worth to attend.

The importance of digital technologies in tourism, providing opportunities for innovation and preparing the sector for the future of work, is at the centre of World Tourism Day this year. Dedicated to digital transformation issues, this year's World Tourism Day will help to further explore the opportunities provided to tourism by technological advances including big data, artificial intelligence and digital platforms.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day there will be scores of free programmes all across the country. Do not miss numerous free city tours to discover hidden secrets of many locations in both, major as well as smaller towns.

"Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all" is the theme of this year's World Tourism Day. It is a unique opportunity to raise awareness on the potential contribution of creating more and better jobs to sustainable tourism development, while providing a platform for investment, partnerships and collaboration towards a more responsible and inclusive tourism sector.
