A day full of trdelník, wine, and good spirits awaits visitors again at Trdlofest!
Skalický trdelník is a sweet Slovak speciality made from walnut dough with a long-standing tradition.
To this day, it’s still produced in the town of Skalica by using the original baking method in an open fire and following the traditional recipe. The dough is wrapped around a wooden stake – ‘trdlo’ – and spun and baked in the fires at the so-called ‘black kitchen’ of the Franciscan Monastery. In October 2007, Skalický trdelník was granted an EU trademark as the first Slovak food product, landing the first trademark duly registered by the European Committee in Slovakia.
This Skalica speciality goes hand in hand with Trdlofest, known as a daylong festival of music, tradition, wine, good moods, and above all else, Skalický trdelník. A ‘Maxitrdelník’ is baked each year, breaking a record in 2014 with 208 centimetres in length. We’re looking forward to seeing you in Skalica on May 14!
