The ZOO of Spišská Nová Ves in the Eastern Slovakia is the youngest and smallest ZOO in Slovakia. It is located close to the National park Slovak Paradise (Slovenský raj) which is one of the top national parks of Slovakia.
The ZOO covers 8 hectares in the lovely area of Madaras Park in the south-eastern part of the town, which is a favourite place of relax. It has been opened in 1989.
You can see here 300 animals and 90 species of exotic and domestic fauna. The most attractive of them are registered in the so called Red Book of Endangered Animals. A lot of woods in the ZOO provide a pleasant shade for animals and visitors, and it also gave rise to the arboretum containing more than 30 tree species. The lake and the brook give a special effect to the nice landscape of the ZOO.
2 playgrounds for children are also in the ZOO. During the summer season, junior visitors can spring on the air giraffe or air castle; they can ride a horse and enjoy many other attractions. Kiosks with fast foods and souvenirs are also available. A lot of events take place here every year. The whole year round you can visit the Pavilion AQUATERRA presenting aquarium and terrarium animals and the ZOO-shop.
