The 15th year of the International Mountain Rescue Service Race.
Vlado Tatarka,
one of the most renowned figures of the Slovak rock climbing and ski touring
scene, an experienced mountain guide, and a dedicated, well-experienced
rescuer, died on 17 August 2001 while climbing the western pillar to Veľký
Ganek in the High Tatras.
After his unexpected passing, his hooks remained in the rocks and the curves of
his skis in its steep chutes, with neither the sun nor the rain able to erase
his memory.
The Vlado Tatarka Memorial is a race that helps us remember the name of this man, who served as an example to many in both sports and in life.
