All around the world, there are areas which are attractive in their own way and lure visitors. Some regions have a key role in the geological history of the Earth, they are interesting in a certain way, uniqueness or beauty. In this reagrd, geoparks have been created to focus on the protection of abiotic nature, scientific research as well as to education to arouse interest of the public. Growing around the world through the growth of geoparks, geotourism focuses not only to flora and fauna, but also to abiotic environment. Currently, there are three geoparks in Slovakia - Banská Bystrica Geopark, Banská Štiavnica Geopark and Novohrad-Nógrád Global UNESCO Geopark.
Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of geological significance are managed with a particular concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Locations that have a particular geological or geomorphological significance can be found in here. As well as its inherent geological characteristics these geosites may also have cultural or heritage significance. There are Global Geoparks and National Geoparks, Slovakia thus priding with both types.
