In the vicinity of the distinctive village of Podbiel, with its unique complex of folk-architecture buildings, located in the region surrounding the Orava dam, we can find the precious technical monument Františkova huta (Francis’s Smelting Plant).
The remains of Františkova huta are located within the area of Nižná, left of the road leading from Podbiel to Roháče. It was built in 1836.
Fragments of the iron-hammer, feeder and sewage conduit, blower chamber, factory hall and the blast furnace have been preserved until today.
Iron ore smelting demonstrations using the ancient technology take place there in late August as part of the popular Ironwork Days.
