From gorges to peaks – spring hikes in the Trenčín Region

The Turiec region will enchant you with the Šútovský vodopád waterfall – the most beautiful waterfall in the Malá Fatra mountains

Are you planning a trip to the Turiec region? In that case, you should definitely visit the Šútovský vodopád waterfall. It’s located in the Malá Fatra mountains in the quiet surroundings of the Šútovská dolina valley, and with a height of approximately 38 metres, it is one of the highest waterfalls in Slovakia.

The trip begins in the village of Šútovo, specifically in the part Rieka, and the route follows the blue hiking trail through the Šútovská dolina valley. This is among the lesser demanding paths and can be managed even by families with small children. The journey is about 5 kilometres in length and takes about 1.5 hours.

The first part leads comfortably along an asphalt road, which later turns into a forest trail. The valley is wide and peaceful, and along the entire route the atmosphere is enhanced by the soundscape in the form of the Šútovský potok stream. Along the way, you’ll come across educational boards introducing local nature and attractions of the national park. The route is even suitable for cyclists.

The waterfall itself is located at the end of the valley at an elevation of about 830 metres. The water falls from a height over the rock wall and creates a fine mist, which is a pleasant refreshment in the summer months. The waterfall is at its most beautiful in spring, however, or after rains, when its flow is the strongest. In winter, it turns into a fascinating icy landscape.

Few people know that only about a kilometre above the waterfall are the springs Mojžišove pramene (the Moses springs). Impressive tiny springs of water flow out of the massive rock wall here and supply the Šútovský potok stream and Šútovský vodopád waterfall. Their name is inspired by the biblical story of Moses, who struck a rock in the desert with his staff and let water gush out of it. According to local legends, the springs were created in a similar way. In the warm summer months, an interesting bonus is the flooded quarry near Šútovo, where you can pleasantly refresh yourself.

At the beginning of the valley, you’ll find a car park and a small snack bar at the Chata Fatranka cottage. Along the way you can also stop at the Chata Vodopád cottage. The Šútovský vodopád waterfall combines easy hiking, beautiful nature and an iconic waterfall, making it one of the most beautiful trips in Malá Fatra.

From the village of Šútovo, along the above-mentioned Šútovský vodopád waterfall and Mojžišove pramene springs, there is also a path to the highest peak of Malá Fatra – Veľký Kriváň. From forest trails to the peaks of the Gron

The trail starts at the end of the village of Hliník nad Hronom and leads to the edge of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, in the direction of Sklené Teplice. This is a one-way only, green-marked circular trail. The exposed sections with ladders and chains provide it with a subtle sense of adventure. If you want to extend your trip, set off from Sklené Teplice via hrad Teplica castle on the yellow trail and then the green trail. A walk of several hours will turn into a full-day journey through the countryside.

Among the hidden natural treasures of the central Pohronie is clearly the Starohutský vodopád waterfall, which is one of the lowest waterfalls in Slovakia. It falls from a height of about 5 metres and was created by the tectonic subsidence of rock blocks. From the waterfall, you can find the Vojšín educational trail, which leads across Bujakov vrch peak and vrch Vojšín peak to the village of Malá Lehota and to the natural monument – the Andezitové kamenné more (Andesite Stone Sea).

Set off with us to Vysoké skalky – the highest peak of the Pieniny

The Pieniny are the highest craggy mountain range in Slovakia. Even though they are better known to the public as the Tri Koruny (Three Crowns), their highest point is the Vysoké skalky cliffs, which are located directly on the Slovak-Polish border, near the villages of Stráňany and Veľký Lipník. You can start a trip to this peak from several places. The easiest is from Stráňany, from where the hike takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. An easier variation is to climb from the village of Veľký Lipník, on the path which continues along the ridge to the finish and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

If you’re looking for a more challenging all-day hike, we recommend the route Kúpele Vyšné Ružbachy spa – Na Poľane – Stráňanské sedlo saddle – Vysoké skalky – Kúpele Vyšné Ružbachy spa. The not quite 27 kilometres will take you about 9 hours. You’ll start the hike at the unique travertine Kráter (Crater) pond in the Vyšné Ružbachy spa. Here you’ll join the green trail, walking down the street to the church at the intersection. Staying on the green trail, turn left and continue to the ski resort at the end of the village. A well-maintained path through the forest will then take you to the Na Poľane crossroads, where you’ll turn right and continue along the green trail towards Stráňanské sedlo saddle. Upon crossing the main road, you’ll enter the protection zone of the Pieniny National Park and continue along the green trail.

OOCR Severný Spiš - Pieniny

You’ll then proceed alternately through meadows and forest to the saddle Sedlo pod Vysokými skalkami, which lies on the Slovak-Polish border. At this crossroads, turn right and continue along the green trail along the path to Kapralowa Wysoka. After a short climb, you’ll arrive at the viewpoint and the highest peak of the Pieniny, Vysoké skalky. The view from here is breathtaking, from the Spišská Magura in the south to the Belianske Tatry in the west and the Tri Koruny in the north. Waterfalls in Slovenský raj – natural treasures you must see

Slovenský raj (Slovak Paradise) is one of the most beautiful natural areas in Slovakia. It is known in particular for its gorges, ladders and wild nature, but one of its biggest attractions is the waterfalls here, which create an unforgettable atmosphere and make hiking a genuine experience.

Another interesting waterfall welcomes you in the Malý Kyseľ gorge. The Machový vodopád waterfall (Moss waterfall) is one of three waterfalls in close succession. It’s formed by water falling from a height of 8 metres in several streams over a moss-covered wall. Its full beauty is especially evident in spring, when the snow melts, or after heavy rains. In winter, however, it shows itself in a completely different light. The flowing springs freeze and form a gorgeous sheet of ice.

The most unique waterfall in Slovenský raj is probably the Okienkový vodopád waterfall (Window waterfall), so-named because the water here flows through a rock “window”. During a walk through the Suchá Belá gorge, hikers can also pass through it and take great photos at this spot. On the ascent, you’ll come across several smaller and larger waterfalls, the romantic Misové vodopády waterfalls or the two-stage Korytový vodopád waterfall. Their magic lies mainly in the fact that they are overcome by climbing up ladders directly downstream of the water.

You can find all of this in the mountains of the Šariš region, which are still an undiscovered destination without crowds of tourists. Enjoy the privacy of quiet trails, peaceful nature, intense contact with the landscape, unique experiences and breathtaking views.

The Slanské vrchy mountains are an ideal choice for easy climbs. The highest peak, Šimonka, is one of the most popular destinations and offers beautiful panoramic views of the Vysoké Tatry mountains and Kráľova hoľa. Another tip for a comfortable hike is Soľnohrad (also known as Zbojnícky hrad (The Bandits’ Castle)) from the village of Ruská Nová Ves, from where you can continue along forest trails to Sigord near Prešov.

The lake with a boathouse offers not only tasty snacks and photogenic views, but also the opportunity to rent row boats and pedal boats. From the village of Podhradík, you can reach the ruins of hrad Šebeš castle in 15 minutes; it offers a beautiful view of the Slanské vrchy mountains. From the castle, you can continue exploring the Dubová Hora nature reserve with its interesting natural rock formations, such as Džad, Skalné okno, Mohylky or Kamenná tvár.

The Čergov mountains offer a moderately demanding hike to a popular tourist destination – the highest point, which is called Minčol. If you choose to ascend via the route from the village of Kyjov, you should not miss a visit to hrad Kamenica castle and the rocky crag known as Spiaci mních (Sleeping monk). The peak Lysá, which you can reach from the ski resort in Drienica, is also popular for its beautiful scenery. Make sure you visit the historical monument called Oltár Kameň (Altar Rock) and the settlement of Baranie with its interesting historical wooden houses.

The lesser-known Bachureň mountains are also definitely worth a visit. The highest peak, which has the same name, offers views of the Vysoké Tatry, Branisko and Levočské vrchy mountains. Mindžová peak, located above the village of Lipovce, is also suitable for less experienced hikers and is one of the best viewpoints in the area. For more adventurous explorers, we recommend visiting the local gorges – the most well-known of them is the Lačnovský kaňon canyon near the village of Lipovce. This gorge is narrow and there are interesting rock formations here, such as Mojžišov stĺp, Kamenná Baba, Skalné oko, Vrátnica and Komín. In places where the Lačnovský potok stream passes through the gorges, various waterfalls have also been formed. The Tiesňava Parkáň gorge below the Mindžová peak is passable along an unmarked trail leading along its wild bottom and a well-worn path along the edge of the rocks.

In search of the natural treasures of the Horný Zemplín

You’ll also find interesting hiking opportunities in the Horný Zemplín (Upper Zemplín). One of them is the trail from the village of Príslop to Gazdoráň, which is one of the most beautiful trips in the Poloniny National Park. It will lead you through meadows, forests, geologically interesting sites and a protected landscape area and offers an ideal combination of easy hiking, rare nature and beautiful views. This is a hike for those seeking peace and an authentic landscape.

The trail starts in the village of Príslop near the tourist information centre and leads along the state road past a gazebo and a spring to the Greek Catholic Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. The trail here turns onto an unpaved forest road and is then followed by a gentle but continuous climb through meadows to the Kuršie mount, where there is a cell phone tower and one of the first notable viewpoints. Beautiful panoramas of the surrounding landscape open up from there.

From Kuršie peak, the trail descends through meadows towards the sedlo Barankovec saddle, where it intersects a state road. This section is also known as the “shot-through road”. This is the geological site of Dara, which is exceptional for its exposed layers of flysch. On this saddle, you can see the conditions that prevailed here millions of years ago at the bottom of the historical sea, when these rocks were formed.

From the saddle, the trail continues with a pleasant, gentle climb through a charming forest. Along the way, you’ll pass a wooden cross, which is another landmark. Then the trail passes the grassy peak of Gazdoráň. From there, there is a wonderful view of the wide surroundings. A panoramic view of the Starina Water Reservoir, the Bukovské vrchy mountains and the Polish Bieszczady mountains opens up. From the top, the trail continues through meadows and gradually descends along a forest and later an old asphalt road to the final point Nad Brezoveckou zátokou, where it connects to the main road.

You’ll discover several interesting things along the 7-kilometre trail. The Gazdoráň Nature Reserve is a protected area with the fourth level of protection that is exceptional for the occurrence of thermophilic meadow communities. Starina is the largest water reservoir for drinking water in Central Europe. Seven Ruthenian villages – Ruské, Dara, Zvala, Ostružnica, Smolník, Veľká Poľana and Starina (after which the reservoir is named) – were displaced because of it.

Hiking trips to lesser-known and peaceful places in the Košice world region

Are you a fan of little-known, but enchanting locations that have preserved their natural beauty? The Košice Region hides several of them. A visit to the Silická planina plain is a treat for all the senses. After a winding climb from the Gombasecká jaskyňa cave area, a plateau opens up before your eyes as if from a nature film. Stratenská píla is a place made for those who want to literally stroll through Slovenský raj at a leisurely pace and also experience this national park in its picturesque beauty. You can start the walk in the village of Stratená. The red trail will take you from there to a very intimate corner of nature, where the greenery of the surrounding forests meets the blue water surface. Along the path, you‘ll be accompanied by the flow of the Hnilec River and one of the most interesting railway lines in Slovakia.

If you’re lucky enough to catch a passing train, you’ll realise how ingeniously and sensitively man has integrated this technical infrastructure into the natural environment. You’ll have good views from the sunny slope above the local cottages, which complete the entire scenery. This also changes during the year depending on the level of the Palcmanská Maša reservoir, which ends in the small magical bay of Stratenská píla. If you get into a small boat here, you can continue along the strait of the dam, under the railway bridges, all the way to the much better-known village of Dedinky.

In addition to the Slovenský raj, the Košice World Region also has Raj vtáčí (Bird Paradise), which is located in the unique area of the Senianske rybníky fishponds, which are the largest pond system in Slovakia. The surrounding countryside here has an interesting steppe character with local wetlands and is ideal not only for knowledgeable birdwatchers, but also for laypeople looking for a perfect escape from civilisation. Kilometres of educational trails following the dams will give you the opportunity to take walks with stops at observation towers, from which there is a good view of the surface of the ponds and the entire surrounding landscape of the Východoslovenská nížina lowland.
