The region bears the name of the Ipeľ river, great part of which flows along the frontier between Slovakia and Hungary.
The depressed parts of Poiplie are surrounded by volcanic mountain ranges. Although the last volcanoes extinguished a long time ago, they have left great mineral wealth here. Apart from once famous mining towns like Krupina or Pukanec, the region also boasts great many castle ruins (Fiľakovo, Divín, Modrý Kameň, Čabraď) and forts of the anti-Turkish defence line (Bzovík).
The long period of Turkish threat has left its traces as well. This southern corner of Slovakia has many old monasteries, manor houses and unique technical monuments set in wonderful landscape covered by vineyards. Hot water springs in spa Dudince are destinations of all those who want to relax in natural hot water springs.
