The town Hurbanovo is notorious not only for the locally produced beer Zlatý bažant, but above all for the oldest Slovak observatory, history of which initiated in 1871.
The oldest and best known Slovak observatory stands in the middle of the historic park in centre of town Hurbanovo in the south of Slovakia.
It dates to 1871. Dr. Mikuláš Konkoly-Thege, the local native is the figure associated with foundation and running of the observatory. He dedicated all his property, house, garden and the equipment of the observatory to the state in 1899.
Today the employees of the observatory in Hurbanovo invest their time and efforts to research and education. Observatory is also open to public in the night and offers attractive observation of the night sky.
