Reveal the hidden treasures of Slovakia's museums and galleries. For only one day each year, visitors can stay at Slovak museums and galleries at least until midnight or even longer to explore unique paintings, sculptures and other works of art.
Long Night of Museums
On this day, local museums and galleries all focus on activities that usually remain hidden from the public eye – in other words, they willl open their “secret chambers” to the public.
Besides showing its current exhibitions, for this night the museums and galleries prepared very special programmes. Over several hours, visitors will be able to attend special presentations on current exhibitions, workshops for families with children, workshops for adults, musical performances and other fascinating events across Slovakia.
At the occasion of the International Day of Museums, museums and galleries in Slovakia are declaring the mid-May Saturday, to be the Night of Museums and Galleries. On that day, the public can visit the institutions' exhibitions and specially prepared events for a special entrance fees, usually paid in the first visited museum only. Museums and Galleries are also concentrating on activities, which remain uncovered through the year. They are showing their “hidden chambers”.
Organised worldwide around May 18th, the Night of Museums and Galleries is a European-wide event sponsored by the Council of Europe to present Europe's cultural heritage to the greatest possible degree. The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that Museums and Galleries are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among the people.
This year, the Night of Museums and Galleries will take place on Saturday, May 18th. In Slovakia, take your opportunity to enjoy this event e.g. in Banská Bystrica, Bojnice, Bratislava, Brezno, Častá, Dolná Krupá, Dolný Kubín, Dunajská Streda, Fiľakovo, Galanta, Hanušovce nad Topľou, Košice, Kremnica, Levice, Levoča, Lučenec, Markušovce, Martin, Modra, Modrý Kameň, Myjava, Nitra, Nová Baňa, Nové Zámky, Poprad, Prešov, Rimavská Sobota, Rožňava, Senica, Sereď, Skalica, Spišská Nová Ves, Strečno, Stropkov, Svidník, Svätý Anton, Šaľa, Trnava or Tvrdošín.
