The mountain hotel Sliezsky dom is the starting point for the trip to the tallest mountain of Slovakia - the Gerlachovský štít peak (2,655 m). The route leads by the terrace-shaped Velická dolina valley, with a beautiful 15 m tall Velický vodopád waterfall. For its botanical diversity, the terrace above the Velický vodopád waterfall bears the name Kvetnica (The Flower Garden).
Unmarked path turns off at this place. It is the beginning of the ascent to the Gerlachovský štít peak over the Velická próba mountaineering route. The route called Batizovská próba descends to the valley Batizovská dolina.
The hikers interested in the ascent to the tallest peak of the Tatras must be aware that it is only possible in company of a professional mountain guide. Services of experienced guides are provided to visitors according to the price list of the Mountain Rescue Service of the Tatra National Park. Its seat is in Starý Smokovec.
The ascent to the peak Gerlachovský štít is not
very demanding but it may be dangerous for instable weather. Many a
tourist lost his/her way at poor visibility in the complicated terrain
and to some of them the trip resulted fatal.
