The ideal starting point for your winter hike to the mountain huts is Starý Smokovec – the oldest settlement in the High Tatras. There is no better track for sledging than the one at Hrebienok. Enjoy an exceptional cultural experience inside the giant ice structure – the Tatra Ice Dome, which offers a new thematic processing every year.

Legendary mountain huts, winter waterfalls, and a nativity scene made from snow
There are twelve alpine huts that are accessible by hiking trail during winter in the High Tatras. At Rainerova chata hut, about half an hour’s walk from Hrebienok, enjoy the hut keeper’s home-brewed “tea” while admiring the large nativity scene made entirely from snow – this is the hut‘s traditional winter attraction. Or walk up to the Studený potok waterfalls, which are the most well-known and accessible waterfalls in the High Tatras. This is a walk that is truly worth taking, and it is manageable at any age.

An endless sledge ride
From Hrebienok to Starý Smokovec, you can enjoy sledging either by day or night. This is a popular attraction for whole families or groups of friends. Take the comfortable funicular ride to Hrebienok and enjoy sledging on the 2.5 kilometre track. And then do not miss the chance to visit the Swiss House. The unique mini-museum dedicated to local “sherpas” is located here. These mountain porters are a European rarity. The museum collection includes old mountaineering tools and the skis of generations past.
