December full of joy, fun, attractions and surprises waits for everyone visiting Košice this year. Around Christmastime, there are always lots of lights, pleasant food, delicious drinks, good mood and wide range of events in metropolis of Abov Region and eastern Slovakia. Special atmosphere takes over the whole city offering breathtaking spectacle every evening.
Strongly targeted on families, fabulous festive season in Košice is with pride traditionally focused on children. No matter how cold is outside, there is always a lot of action dedicated to the youngest. Especially they are fascinated by Christmas tree on Košice main pedestrian zone, traditionally belonging to the tallest such trees in Slovakia. This year's main Christmas decoration is a silver fir, 36 years old and 18 meters high.
Košice Christmas Fair during colourful Košice fairy-tale Christmas celebrations last from December 5th to 23rd, while celebrations itself starts November 24th. Wonderful programme would include carols, theatrical performances, concerts, live performances of music and other arts as well as charity events. The atmosphere of Christmas will be highlighted by varicoloured lights transforming Košice city centre into a real fairy-tale.
Not only Christmas markets at High Street with mead, hot wine, punch, sausages, ham and lots of stalls with Christmas and hand-made products or Christmas programme with folk groups, theatre performances and various Slovak bands lure to visit capital of Košice region in winter, but also wonderful fairy-tale sculptures made from ice bricks right in the city centre will be here to make a Christmas stay in Košice even more interesting. There will also be an ice curving workshop for children.
This year's fairy-tale theme shall bring figures such three-headed dragon, Princess with the Golden Star or Doggie and Pussycat to Košice downtown. Ice sculptures made by renowned sculptors are to be carved into the clear ice bricks December 16th and 17th in park in historical centre of Košice near known Singing fountain and will please the wide public as long as the weather would allow. Last year, illuminated ice sculptures were on site until February, so cross your fingers to repeat the success.
The whole chain of events will be crowned by magnificent fireworks to celebrate New Year's Eve. Of course, it would not be Košice to satisfy with only one celebration. As usual, the morning one will be dedicated to children, while the evening edition for those who plan to be up all night until the early light.
