The Story Coming to Life Within Us

31 Jan – 1 Feb 2026   |   Stará Ľubovňa, Prešov Region   |   vertikalavychodnehovetra.sk

The Story Coming to Life Within Us is a two-day commemorative and cultural-educational event taking place on 31st January and 1st February 2026 in Stará Ľubovňa and Chmeľnica on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Its goal is to recall the fates of specific people from this region whose lives were affected by Nazi persecution, connecting historical memory with personal stories, literature, and the locations where these events actually took place. The centerpiece of the programme is the book Mamele by Daniela Hroncová Fakľová, which tells the true story of a Jewish family from Chmeľnica. The author will meet readers in a moderated discussion and autograph session at the Provinčný dom Gallery in the center of Stará Ľubovňa.

On Saturday afternoon, participants will join the nationwide #WeRemember campaign at St. Nicholas Square, a symbolic public tribute to Holocaust victims. The Sunday programme will take participants directly into the field – a guided walk In the Footsteps of the Story Mamele in Chmeľnica will lead through the locations where the true story of the book unfolded. The event concludes with the solemn act Light for M. Stanka at the Old Cemetery in Stará Ľubovňa, dedicated to a priest whose life story is an important part of the local memory.
