The traditional Bartolomejský jarmok fair in Ilava is a celebration of the summer, good harvest and St. Bartholomew because it is organised on St. Bartholomew´s day.
Bartolomejský jarmok fair is always held late in August in the centre of Ilava, a town in the region of middle Považie.
The history of fairs in Ilava goes back to 15thcentury. Ilava got several privileges to organise fairs the oldest being from the year 1430 awarded by the king Sigismund. The most common products of the fair are handicraft goods by potters, smiths, lace-makers, honey-cakes makers, tinkers or carvers. The fair is made more attractive by the cultural programme showing music, dance and theatre groups, folklore ensembles and brass bands.
