Region of Banská Bystrica lies in the centre of the country and it borders on Hungary in the south. Part of this border coincides with the river Ipeľ. The natural symbol of the region is the river Hron.

Metropolis of the region with a rich mining history is the town Banská Bystrica. Monuments that are samples of popular architecture can bee seen in Špania Dolina and Hronsek . Lovers of hiking prefer trips in the mountain range Nízke Tatry and seeing the caves Harmanecká and Bystrianska above all in summer. The mysterious virgin forest and the romantic Čiernohronská forest railway are the main landmarks in the environs of Čierny Balog.

The southern part of the region is remarkable above all for numerous castle ruins (Fiľakovo, Divín, Modrý Kameň, Čabraď) and mining towns Banská Štiavnica (UNESCO monument) and Kremnica.
