Region of Horehronie

Location: Banskobystrický kraj, okres Banská Bystrica, Banská Bystrica

GPS: N48°44'9'' E19°8'45''

The beautiful landscape with typical villages around the upper reach of the Hron river lying almost in the heart of Slovakia was given the name Horehronie. The river Hron, which gave the name to the territory we are talking about, springs in the southern hillside of the majestic Kráľova hoľa Mt.

It flows westward from this legendary mountain in the eastern end of the Low Tatras.

Monuments of popular architecture are dispersed all over the region and some of them are concentrated in the Monument Reserve of Popular Architecture in Špania Dolina and Hronsek (wooden church).

Horehronie has all possible natural assets. The mountain ranges Nízke Tatry and Veľká Fatra are a kind of paradise for hikers and cyclists. Hikers love to visit the mountains Nízke Tatry in summer. Underground and karstic formations can be admired in Harmanecká or Bystrianska jaskyňa caves.

Skiing is wonderful and widely popular in Donovaly, Turecká, and Mýto pod Ďumbierom or in environs of Čierny Balog. Cross-country skiing above Banská Bystrica is practiced not only by domestic lovers of this sport, but also by foreigners.

Attraction near Čierny Balog is the mysterious virgin forest and romantic Čiernohronská lesná železnica (forest railway). The spa town Brusno is not far away.

Districts: Banská Bystrica, Brezno.
