A little bit of natural sciences can be now found in Nitra Gallery in Nitra. The exhibition title, Principia 2.0, refers to Isaac Newton’s theoretical work Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica that formulates basic mathematical-physical theories including the theory of gravity and classical mechanics.

The exhibition includes a collection of video footages and 3D animations that are a part of a longterm and multi-layer research of the Czech visual artist Jakub Roček.

Jakub Roček uses the media of drawing, graphics, installation, digital video, 3D animation and film. The main theme of his works is a kind of a “scientific” model of the world that he constantly analyses and questions. He mostly focuses on the theme of virtual reality and its current forms. Roček is interested in the creation of simulacra that shape the basic principle of “realities” that are not based on the real physical world, but they are just codes and mathematic values.

His research mostly deals with general terms of our existence, such as: matter, space and time, body, progress and evolution that he identifies and contemplates within cyberspace. A very important part of his work is the virtual 3D space represented by digital video and 3D animations. The individual components of his work fluctuate in an endless mixture, moving from one video footage to another. Thus, the figures, objects and scenes are reused several times in Roček’s works, always in a different situation. It creates an endless loop of events and stories whose main protagonists are the “humble servants of the digital era”.

Principia 2.0 represents an updated world and its mathematical-physical-technological principles that manage to overcome today’s limits and contemplate the future and the way it could look like. It takes us to the edge of our current possibilities where the whole mass that includes humans, machines and inanimate objects is a part of a technological singularity. It does not make any sense to try and differentiate the individual masses anymore. Man, machines and objects are considered equal in this world that blends the languages of science, art and poetics into one.

A follow-up project titled Principias is presented at the Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava from January 7th, 2017 to January 28th, 2018. An artist book of the same title has been published for the exhibition.

Jakub Roček (*1989) studied under Svätopluk Mikyta at the Studio of Drawing and Printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Brno University of Technology (2016). He has participated at several group and solo exhibitions and took residencies in the Czech Republic and abroad. He lives and works in Prague.

This project has been supported using public funds provided by Slovak Arts Council. The Council is the leading partner of the project.
