The Music Museum is a documentary, scientific-research and methodological institution with nationwide activities, which purposefully acquires, preserves, scientifically and professionally processes, uses and makes available museum collections related to music, documenting the field of music culture in Slovakia from the oldest times until the present day.

In addition, the museum is active in a network ofinternational music documentation institutions (IAML - International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres); it is the central workplace for registration and processing of preserved music sources in the territory of Slovakia and the national headquarters of the International Inventory of Musical Sources (RIMS – Répertoire International des Sources Musicales).

 The Music Museum, which was founded at the beginning of 1991, continues in the successful work and activities of the music department of the SNM Historical Museum. Its workplaces are situated on the third floor of the northern fortifications of the Bratislava Castle and in a manor house in Dolná Krupá, which also houses the  exposition and exhibition premises.

Music Museum SNM has the following permanent expositions:
