Fishing

Slovakia belongs to the countries that can boast of beautiful high mountains and hills. A lot of rivers flow across them as well as brooks and mountain streams. Several of them are suitable for various activities. The water sports lovers can sail on them or bathe in them during the summer months.

However, there are people who love the piece and quiet, beautiful scenery, soft bubbling of water, long and relaxing hours sitting on river banks, enjoying the view of the silent and calm water levels. Meanwhile they can spend their time fishing. Recently fishing has become still more popular in Slovakia. It has become an attractive and popular form of active relax.

Even though Slovakia is not a very large country, it offers plenty of possibilities for fishing. On the territory of Slovakia 900 fishing reserves are available. They provide trout, greyling, carp and salmon waters. The most frequently occurring fish in the Slovak rivers, lakes and other water areas is the carp, the Danube salmon, the perch, the pike, the zander, the greyling and many others

In carp waters the most frequently caught fish is the carp, the pike, the sheatfish, the zander, the tench, the crucian, the eel and the bream.
Fish like the brown trout, the rainbow trout, the brook trout or the greyling can be found in salmon waters that are also frequent and available in Slovakia. The biggest fish species from the salmon family is the Danube salmon. It should be caught in cold water of mountain streams and mountainous areas because this species requires a lot of oxygen.

Beginners, as well as experienced fishermen, mostly prefer the river basins of theDanube, the Váh, the Laborec, the Poprad, the Ipeľ, the Hron, the Turiec, theOrava, the Ondava and the Nitra. Very popular are water areas that are so numerous in Slovakia. The best known are the dams Oravská priehrada, Liptovská Mara, Zemplínska Šírava as well as other artificial lakes like Slňava, Duchonka, Ružín, Teplý vrch, Veľká Domaša and Dedinky that are also very attractive.

There are certain principles and rules to follow when fishing. A fisherman has to have a fishing licence which allows him to fish legally in Slovakia. One can obtain the fishing licence at municipal councils or offices according to the region in which one wants to catch fish.

A fisherman has to write a record of the date of fishing and the catch has to be updated right after fishing. In one day a fisherman cannot keep more than two pieces of fish like the carp, the tench, the pike, the zander, the sheatfish or the silver salmon. Not more than 5kg of fish under individual protection can be kept.

Another advantage of fishing is that one can be on holiday near a water area and go fishing at the same time. If you feel like trying fishing and you are patient enough, nothing is in the way for the Slovak “gold fish” to fulfil you your secret wishes.
