On October 31st, 2017 we shall commemorate the 500th year jubilee of the Reformation, which was initiated in Wittenberg when Dr. Martin Luther publicly posted his 95 Theses, the Disputation on the Power of Indulgences, Slovakia and Bratislava as well. Also with more than 70 lectures from lectors over the world on an international symposium.

Considering the fact that the Reformation quickly spread out to the territory of contemporary Slovakia and has had significant influence on the spiritual, cultural, national and societal life ever since, the Scientific Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava on its meeting on March 27th, 2015 decided that this jubilee will be commemorated at the institution by an international symposium with the title “500 Years of Reformation in Slovakia”.

The above mentioned title was chosen with the intent to invite a wide spectrum of experts who would not be traditionally limited only to the fields of church history, theology and history. It it supposed to be an opportunity for all experts to present their research pertaining to the nature, reception and the impact of the Reformation on the spiritual, cultural, societal and artistic development of Slovakia. This symposium is aimed to be ecumenically open, academically rigorous and interdisciplinary.

The symposium is thematically primarily oriented on the context of Reformation in the territory of contemporary Slovakia. To research areas belong history, theology (e.g. critique of hermeneutics and church fathers by reformers, etc.) literature and culture as well as sacral art. Grand opening is planned for Thursday at 11 a.m.

English, German, Czech and Slovak are the languages of the symposium. Length of presentation is planned for max. 40 minutes while length of discussion is limited to 15 minutes. After the symposium, submitted research papers will be peer-reviewed and published in a form of an international conference proceedings book. Come over to meet lectors from Austria, Canada, Czechia, Germany, Israel, Norway, Slovakia, Russia and USA that will provide 71 lectures within 3 days.

As the symposium is not only dedicated to lectures, participants will have chance to discover Bratislava and surroundings on Friday excursions with option to choose one they prefer.
